Transmen & Being Stealth

Transmen, like all individuals, have the right to determine how they want to live their lives and present themselves to the world. One choice that some transmen make is to live stealth, which means they choose not to disclose their trans identity to others, and instead, live as a cisgender man. In this blog, we’ll explore what it means to be a stealth transman, the reasons why someone might choose to be stealth, and some of the potential challenges that come with this decision.

What does it mean to be a stealth transman?

A stealth transman is someone who lives as a man without disclosing their trans identity to others. This means that they may not tell anyone about their trans status, including friends, family, coworkers, or romantic partners. In some cases, a stealth transman may choose to disclose their trans identity to a select few people, such as a partner or close friend, but generally, they keep their trans status private.

Why do some transmen choose to be stealth?

There are many reasons why a transman might choose to live stealth. Some of the most common reasons include:

Safety concerns: Unfortunately, many trans people face discrimination, harassment, and violence because of their trans status. For some transmen, living stealth is a way to avoid this kind of mistreatment and stay safe.

Passing (I personally dislike this term) privilege: Some transmen may feel more comfortable living stealth because they are able to pass as cisgender. Passing privilege can provide a sense of safety and comfort, as well as access to cisgender spaces and opportunities.

Personal preference: Ultimately, some transmen may simply prefer to keep their trans identity private. This could be because they don’t feel comfortable discussing their gender identity with others, or because they feel that their trans status is irrelevant to who they are as a person.

What are some challenges of being a stealth transman?

While there are many potential benefits to living stealth, there are also some challenges that come with this choice. Some of the most common challenges include:

Feeling isolated: Living stealth can be a lonely experience, as it can be difficult to find others who share your experiences and can relate to your journey as a trans person.

Fear of discovery: There is always a risk that someone will discover a stealth transman’s trans status, which can lead to a variety of negative outcomes, including harassment, discrimination, or violence.

Difficulty accessing trans-specific resources: Some trans-specific resources, such as support groups or medical care, may be more difficult to access for stealth transmen, as these resources are often geared towards individuals who are open about their trans status.

In conclusion, being a stealth transman is a personal choice that each individual must make for themselves. While there are certainly benefits to living stealth, there are also potential challenges to consider. Ultimately, it’s important for each transman to make the decision that feels right for them and to surround themselves with a supportive community that understands and respects their choice.

    Hey Luckie,

I appreciate your blog. I hope there are a lot of guys reading it.

I wanted to comment on a previous post you wrote. I found out I had to have an account. I signed up, but I’m still not sure what the heck to do. There was ‘another’ name organization/company that wanted me to use them to keep track of my accounts. I had no idea what accounts they meant so I just bypassed it.

I’d like to join the fun, but…. I ‘pushed the button’ to respond to a post and it didn’t take me anywhere, even to verify that I had an account.

Would/could you help me unwind this so I can share in the fun, pour flavor?

    Tanks berry, Kevin
